Wylie Preparatory Academy is a unique private school that utilizes an integrated instructional approach to education in order to produce a higher degree of academic achievement. The school is essentially a concrete expression of a UNIVERSITY-MODEL School®. There are two proven elements of educational success: the professional instruction of a classroom teacher and the one-on-one instruction and/or guidance of each student’s parent. Other proven elements which are a part of this school’s programming include low student/teacher ratios, hands-on learning, a strong work ethic for students, effective curriculum and local school operation and management.

Currently there are 18 UMS schools in Texas with new ones opening soon, as well as schools in 13 other states. As the news and excitement about this model spreads we will see many other schools opening soon. For a full list of schools click

UMS Recognized by FOCUS On The FAMILY

WPA is excited to announce that the University-Model School® has recently been added to Focus on the Family's list of five educational choices. View "School Choices" here.

What is a University-Model School®?

University-Model School® (UMS) was developed as a means of acquiring a high-quality education which helps disciple Christian young people while strengthening the home.  We hope to accomplish this by providing an academically sound education in a structure that integrates the home and the school in the common enterprise of making disciples. Thus, a quality education, centered around the Lord Jesus Christ, also becomes quality family time devoted to learning more about the Creator and His creation.

U
MS takes the best aspects of 1) traditional, 2) full-time public and private schools and 3)  home schools and molds them into one model.  UMS uses a university-style schedule where students spend alternate days at school and home where parents continue their instruction.  Central classroom instruction is conducted by professional teachers teaching in their areas of expertise and the home is considered a satellite classroom.

Because of the high level of parent involvement, students receive excellent, well-rounded education for less cost.  Because parents are spending more time with their children, avenues for meaningful communication are available for parents to share their faith, values and convictions on a routine basis.

The UMS academic program meets and exceeds statewide standards for content, skills, and the level of rigor normally associated with college-preparatory programs.  The structure, pacing and accountability provided by the formal school structure are exactly what many parents seek.  UMS provides the perfect solution for parents who feel overwhelmed by home schooling but do not have the means to afford private school or are reluctant to have their children's time absorbed in a full-time school.

UMS caters to a wide variety of student needs by allowing a range of enrollment opportunities.  A student may choose to take only one or two classes, or may opt to take a full academic load at Wylie Prep.  Much like a college catalog, the WPA catalog will be available at registration time with descriptions of courses and prerequisites.  In addition, the catalog will include a description of the parental role for each class.

The parental role ranges from direct instructor in cooperation with the classroom teacher to a monitor of student progress.  Parents receive written instructions from the classroom teacher on a regular basis outlining homework assignments, follow-up study for material covered in class, and any preparation or review needed for each class.
